Aron Gunner led a remarkable life, the product of his Carlsbad upbringing and an unwavering commitment to friends, family and faith. As a child, he continually sought new excitement from his surroundings, eager to learn while making new friends along the way. He enjoyed time in the Calavera Park gymnasium playing youth basketball, learned the basics of baseball at Chase Field, and thrived in soccer through the Carlsbad Wave program. His participation in Junior Lifeguards at Ponto Beach and swim lessons at the Monroe Street Pool evolved into a passion for surfing along Carlsbad’s coast and water skiing at the Carlsbad Lagoon (Snug Harbor). While at Valley Middle School, Aron turned to new challenges; wrestling, broadcast journalism and scouting. Continuing these pursuits while attending Carlsbad High School, Aron became a standout wrestler earning a varsity letter four consecutive years. His involvement with Boy Scouts culminated with the rank of Eagle Scout. Hikers using the trails through Hosp Grove today can still experience the benefits from Aron’s Eagle Scout project. The outstanding CHSTV program provided Aron with unlimited opportunities and skills… resulting in his Award for Excellence from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
While continuing with college, Aron advanced his skills in multimedia and communications. It was at SDSU that he also became an uncompromising Aztec fan, for both basketball and football, while simultaneously developing a devotion to the Padres and Chargers. He graduated from SDSU with a degree in Communications in 2012. Two months later, at the age of 23, Aron passed away after an automobile accident.
Throughout his brief life, Aron found his greatest joy in friendships and family. His infectious smile, beautiful eyes, warm hugs and eternal optimism endeared him to many. It is with Aron’s spirit of compassion for others that the Aron Gunner Memorial Scholarship Foundation moves forward.
